Questions to ask before accepting a solar panel quote

A good solar quote should be transparent. Use these questions to compare installers with confidence.

Before accepting a solar panel quote, homeowners should understand what they are buying. Solar is not just panels on a roof. It is a system that includes panels, inverter, mounting structure, electrical protection, monitoring, warranties and installation quality.

Ask what annual production estimate is being used. The installer should explain expected kWh generation, roof orientation, shading assumptions and whether the estimate is conservative or optimistic.

Ask what percentage of solar energy you are expected to use directly in the home. This is called self-consumption and it has a major impact on savings. A system that produces a lot but exports too much may not pay back as well as expected.

Ask what equipment brands are included and what warranties apply. Panel warranty, inverter warranty and workmanship warranty are different things. Make sure you know who handles support if something fails.

Ask whether the quote includes monitoring. A monitoring app helps homeowners see production and detect problems. Without monitoring, it is harder to know whether the system is performing well.

Ask if the system can be expanded later. Some homeowners start with panels and later add a battery or EV charger. Planning for future expansion can avoid unnecessary replacement costs.

Finally, ask what is excluded. Roof repairs, electrical upgrades, scaffolding, permits or additional protection devices can affect the final price. A transparent installer will prefer clear expectations over surprises.
