Solar panels for holiday homes and short-term rentals

Rental homes use electricity differently. Solar design should consider guests, summer peaks, pools and air conditioning.

Holiday homes and short-term rentals can be strong candidates for solar panels, especially in sunny regions like the Algarve. However, their consumption pattern is different from a normal permanent residence.

A rental property may be quiet during parts of the year and very active in summer. Guests may use air conditioning, pool equipment, appliances, laundry and hot water at the same time. This seasonal peak can make solar production valuable, because summer is also when panels produce more electricity.

Owners should think about more than direct savings. Solar panels can also support property positioning: lower operating costs, better energy performance and a more sustainable guest experience. For some guests, visible solar panels can improve trust in the property.

The challenge is sizing. If the system is designed only for August, it may be oversized for winter. If it is designed only for average annual consumption, it may miss summer savings. A good installer should model seasonal use and explain the compromise.

Battery storage may or may not make sense for rentals. If most consumption happens during daytime because of pool pumps and air conditioning, panels alone may already capture useful savings. If guests use more electricity at night, a battery can be discussed.

For short-term rental owners, the best solar quote should include assumptions about occupancy, summer usage, pool equipment, air conditioning and whether the owner wants maximum savings or a balanced investment.
